In spite of these conditions agriculture is still the main industry here. There were huge mezcal fields with rows full of what looks like
giant aloe vera. We got to watch farmers harvesting the large pinas that they use to make the potent mezcal - very similar to tequila. They were also growing cactus - the new leaves are harvested for human consumption while the older, tough ones are mulched and fed to livestock. A great authentically Mexican moment was riding past a little farm house with goats and chickens out the front
and a lone Mexican practicing his mariachi music on a trumpet. At 3:30pm we finally stopped for lunch at a little dodgy looking place by the roadside. Scott was too scared to drink the water so he had beer. Just what you need after 6 hours of intense exercise.
We rode 51km today, another 150 to go!

Amazing views as we continued to climb into the afternoon – tonight is the highest we’ll be at 2,000m above sea level. As much as our butts hurt it's totally worth it to experience Mexico this way. Our homestay tonight is a little town (1,500 ppl) right at the top of the mountain range. All the little streets are dizzyingly steep! Everyone has beautiful gardens here - full, plump mandarins on the trees and lovely flowers. We stopped just to watch some kittens playing on a wood pile, chickens scratching around. Very peaceful! We had a tasty home cooked supper of black beans and scrambled eggs with chilli and nopal (cactus). Feeling very lucky to be here and to be doing this with Scott.
final day!!! we arrive at the coast
Final day! Didn’t take very long to get off the rough road and back onto the smooth highway. Thank god! There were a few tough climbs, and it was a bit scary with cars whizzing past, but knowing we were so close to the coast gave us a big mental boost. Riding under the ‘Welcome to Puerto Escondio’ sign over the highway was fantastic! We made it! Climbing up one last hill we finally emerged at the top to see the beautiful blue bend of coastline stretching before us. What a beach! Beautiful clear water, clean, and with the
most amazing surf break. All we wanted was to dive in and wash away the pain and bike grease- Puerto Escondio we love you! Really looking forward to the next 5 days here.
